So you decide to revert back to the official rom or you need to return the phone for warranty or you are selling it. Here are some simple instructions:

You will need:

  1. Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit
    • Actually any version of Windows XP or later or Linux could work, but these instructions were written using a machine with Windows 7
  2. HTC SYNC UPDATE
  3. HTC HERO (SPRINT) 2.1 SOFTWARE UPDATE

Steps

  1. Backup everything on your phone!
    • I like SMS Backup (Christoph Studer) for backing up my SMS and MMS messages to my Google Mail
    • If you have a Google account you can login to it on your phone to backup all your contacts
    • Remember to backup your SDCard contents too
  2. Install HTC SYNC (or the USB drivers) before running the RUU update or plugging in your phone
  3. Plug in your phone to your computer via USB
  4. Make sure your phone is in USB Charging mode and not USB Disk mode
  5. Run the HTC HERO (SPRINT) 2.1 SOFTWARE UPDATE
  6. Go through the prompts
  7. Once complete you should reboot your phone and the original factory ROM will be installed just like you never used it before
  8. Login to your Google account on your phone to restore contacts, etc.
  9. You can also manually check for OTA (over the air) updates on your phone to update it to the latest official version
