Compiling a C++ Windows executable with embedded version information and icon - Last Modified 2008-10-14 15:37 UTC - Created 2008-10-14 15:37 UTC

This example shows how to compile your C++ program with custom version information embedded (shows up as Version tab when you view the exe properties).
  1. Create a resource file (say project.rc) following a similiar format as below:
    /*
     To specify the version DON'T modify this file

     Instead do
      windres.exe -D VER_FILEVERSION=2008,8,20,629 -D VER_FILEVERSION_STR=2008,8,20,629 project.rc project.opc

     Note that you should specify values without leading 0 (zero's) otherwise
     the number will be considered as octal and converted to decimal
    */

    #ifndef VER_FILEVERSION
    /* A default version number */
    #define VER_FILEVERSION     0,0,0,0
    #endif

    #ifndef VER_FILEVERSION_STR
    /* A default version number */
    #define VER_FILEVERSION_STR   "0,0,0,0"
    #endif

    /* defines for VERSIONINFO block */
    #define VOS_NT                  0x00040000L

    /* VS_VERSION.dwFileType */
    #define VFT_UNKNOWN             0x00000000L
    #define VFT_APP                 0x00000001L
    #define VFT_DLL                 0x00000002L
    #define VFT_DRV                 0x00000003L
    #define VFT_FONT                0x00000004L
    #define VFT_VXD                 0x00000005L
    #define VFT_STATIC_LIB          0x00000007L

    /* See MSDN "VERSIONINFO Resource"
      http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa381058(VS.85).aspx
    */
    1 VERSIONINFO

    FILEFLAGSMASK 0x0L

    FILEOS VOS_NT

    /* File is an application */
    FILETYPE VFT_APP

    /* Not a VFT_DRV, VFT_FONT, or VFT_VXD */
    FILESUBTYPE 0x0L

    BEGIN
        BLOCK "StringFileInfo"
        BEGIN
        /* Block language charset is U.S. English, Unicode */
            BLOCK "040904B0"
            BEGIN
                VALUE "CompanyName", "YOUR COMPANY NAME HERE"
                VALUE "FileDescription", "YOUR EXE DESCRIPTION HERE"
                VALUE "FileVersion",    VER_FILEVERSION_STR
                VALUE "InternalName", "YOUR EXE DESCRIPTION HERE"
                VALUE "LegalCopyright",  "Copyright (C) 200X"
                VALUE "OriginalFilename", "YOUR-EXE-FILENAME.exe"
                VALUE "ProductName", "YOUR EXE DESCRIPTION HERE"
                VALUE "ProductVersion",  VER_FILEVERSION_STR
            END
        END

        BLOCK "VarFileInfo"
        BEGIN
            VALUE "Translation", 0x409, 1200
        END
    END

    /* EXE ICON */

    AppIconID ICON "CHANGE-THIS--YOUR-ICON-FILE-PATHNAME-HERE.ico"

  2. Compile the icon into a resource object with a command like
    C:\MinGW\bin\windres.exe -D VER_FILEVERSION=2008,12,31,629 -D VER_FILEVERSION_STR=2008,12,31,629 project.rc project.opc
  3. Compile your executable with the resource object included with a command like
    "C:\MinGW\bin\g++.exe" project.opc test.cpp
